Course description
After you finish your PhD you have to make the decision for a new job and career path. This practical course supports PhD's in finding out what they have to offer an employer, what they want in their future career, and provides the necessary tools to apply for a job.
More specific we will focus on the following questions:
- What do I have to offer on the job market?
During your education and work experience as a PhD you have developed a lot of technical and personal competences. In this course we are going to explore your competences, strengths and weaknesses. With this self-knowledge you can present yourself effectively on the job market.
- What do I want in my future career?
After your PhD you have to make the decision for a new job and career path. In this course we provide you with tools to find out what is important for you in your next job in terms of career values, team roles and organizational culture.
- How do I present myself?
Presenting yourself is important in finding a new job. In this course we are going to work on your CV, application letter and prepare for a job interview.
Expected results
In general you can expect the following results:
- Awareness of your personal competences, strengths and weaknesses
- Learning about what is important for you in a job and organization
- Tools to present yourself effectively to an employer
- Formulating goals for yourself to reach your next career step
Career Perspectives versus related WGS course Career Orientation
Career Perspectives is meant for PhD's in their third or fourth year who want to take the next step in their career and want support in defining and taking that step.
Career Orientation aims for personal discovery and acquisition of the most inspiring job. Career Orientation is meant for young scientists (PhD's) who are not thrilled about their currents job and thinking about moving their career in a different direction.
You should not participate in both Career Orientation and Career Perspectives at the same time. Please have a look at the description of the courses, and choose the one that is most appropriate for you.

Fee includes study and training material, coffee/tea and lunches.
Cancellation condition
Until four weeks before the start of the course cancellation fee is free of charge. After this date you will be charged with the full (not reduced) fee.
Note: Exemption of payment after cancellation with the four weeks before the start of the course can be:
1. When you have a replacement. In this situation, please inform the course coordinator.
2. When you have a written statement from your supervisor (doctor in case of illness) indicating the valid reason (circumstances beyond your control) of your withdrawal from the course. Validity of the reason will be evaluated by the WGS Course Commission.
